High Desert Edible Gardening

Grow the fruits, vegetables and herbs you love despite living in a desert climate. Learn the appropriate conditions for the development of your plants and watch your hard work come to life. Since you will be eating your garden, organic methods of fertilization, pest control, companion planting and crop rotation will all be discussed in class.

High Desert Gardening
Wednesdays: 4/14 - 5/12/2010: 6-9 PM
Unlock the secrets to making your garden thrive in the Northern Nevada environment. Learn about selecting plants, planting techniques, getting the most benefit out of watering restrictions, pruning secrets and managing pests. In addition, gain tips for growing fruits, vegetables, roses and lawns.
This class is a 5 night course that covers most aspects of gardening in the high desert. Although the focus is on spring planting and care, all aspects of gardening are discussed. The classes tend to be free-flowing with questions leading into new topics. Class interaction is encouraged.
Included in the course is information about soil conditions, basic garden maintenance, irrigation, insect and weed control, landscape design and maintenance, pruning (shrub, tree, rose), plant selection, planting procedures, lawn maintenance, ground covers, vegetables, fruit trees, roses, flowers and bulbs, house plants and preparing for winter.
The class is offered through TMCC and is part of the High Desert Gardening Series, which offers classes in Spring, Summer and Fall Gardening that empathize the seasonal gardening requirements for Northern Nevada’s high desert. The cost of the class is $85 for all five three hour sessions.

Container Gardening

Turn patios and other paved areas into colorful garden-like areas. Learn to grow healthy plants in containers by finding out about plant selection, fertilization and recognition of plant care concerns. Examples of appropriate container companions, soil and irrigation solutions will be presented as part of this one evening class. Container vegetable gardening will also be discussed.

Summer in the high desert can be hard on your garden, with the high temperatures and lack of water. Learn how to take advantage of the season, what problems to look out for, and normal plant behavior versus a problem beginning to rear its ugly head. We will discuss the season from May to September in an interactive arena.

High Desert Fall Gardening

Fall in the high desert is one of the prettiest times to be outside in your garden. You’ll learn about extending the season right up until the first snow and discover what can be done to help the garden to survive the winter. Learn which plants should be pruned in the fall and which should not, and find out how to prepare your roses, trees, shrubs and lawns for the winter snows, as well as how to produce the best results by watering over the winter.

Group Art Classes
Plant Portraits In Colored Pencil

Plant Portraits in Colored Pencil will be offered for the only time this year through Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC). This 2.5 hour class is held on Mondays from 2 until 4:30 p.m. This class is designed for students of all levels who are interested in botanical illustration using colored pencils. Students will create one (possibly two) representational pictures from live botanical subjects. The technique used will be through the development of a graphite line drawing, transferring that drawing onto watercolor paper and finishing using colored pencil.
The $20 supply fee covers supplies used in class as well as graphite pencils, erasers, and other drafting supplies that the student keeps. In class, students may use the instructor’s professional level pencils. Colored pencils are water based, oil based or waxed based. All three mediums will be available in the classroom for student use. Water based pencils can be used either dry (as a normal pencil) or with a brush to get watercolor-like effects. Both techniques can be explored in the class. The cost of the class is $74 with a non-refundable supply fee of $20 due the first day of class.

Ongoing studio workshops
Saturdays 2-4 p.m. Open studio workshops in botanical art are available most weekends. Colored Pencil and Watercolor instruction is available during these studio sessions. Price includes use of the instructor’s supplies during the workshop. Space is limited to a maximum of 5 students, so reservations are required. Please contact Suzanne at (775) 324-6036 or e-mail through this site to confirm that the workshop will be held and to reserve a space. Cost is $35 per session.
Individual Art Classes by appointment
Individual art classes are available at mutually convenient times. Instruction in botanical art, illustration and other representation art is available using graphite, colored pencils and watercolor.
